Live tutors provide academic assistance, test prep, career support services at no charge to Louisiana residents seven days a week
BATON ROUGE, La. – With students across Louisiana returning to school and settling into a new year of classes, parents and students don't have to tackle every homework challenge alone. Homework Louisiana, a free online tutoring service from the State Library of Louisiana, provides Louisiana families with access to live, expert tutors seven days a week at no cost.
Homework Louisiana offers one-on-one help from more than 4,000 vetted tutors in nearly 200 subjects, from elementary math and reading to high school chemistry, college-level writing, and standardized test preparation. The service is available to learners of all ages and stages – K-12 students, college students, and adult learners residing in Louisiana, and no appointment is needed.
Tutors are available seven days a week from 10 a.m. to midnight for on-demand or scheduled sessions. All services can be accessed from a Louisiana public library, a home computer, or a mobile device by visiting HomeworkLA.org. Tutoring sessions take place in a secure online classroom with real-time chat, an interactive whiteboard, and shared tools, and services are also available in Spanish and Vietnamese language options.
“Louisiana families deserve every advantage when it comes to their children’s education, and Homework Louisiana delivers exactly that through free, expert help whenever a student needs it,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “There’s a lot of talk these days about artificial intelligence, but a chatbot can’t sit down one-on-one with a young person, figure out where they’re stuck in their assignment, and walk them through it until it clicks. These are real, qualified tutors giving each student personal attention and helping them learn. That’s an investment in Louisiana’s future you can count on.”
Educators have raised concerns that turning to AI tools for quick homework answers can bypass the learning process itself. Homework Louisiana is built around a different approach: a live tutor guides students through reasoning, checks their understanding, and helps them build the skills to solve the next problem on their own, providing the kind of support that matters most in test preparation and in mastering difficult assignments.
“Receiving an answer and learning the material are not the same thing,” said State Librarian Meg Placke. “A live tutor asks questions, catches misunderstandings, and encourages a student when a problem feels overwhelming, and this human connection helps learning stick. Whether someone is preparing for the ACT, working through algebra, or studying for a high school equivalency exam, Homework Louisiana pairs them with a real expert dedicated to helping them succeed. Because it’s free and available every day into the evening, it’s there exactly when students are doing their homework.”
In addition to live tutoring, Homework Louisiana provides test preparation for exams including the ACT, GED, and HiSET, self-paced practice resources, drop-off writing review services, and job-search assistance such as resume help and practice interviews.
