State Library’s “Check Out Louisiana” museum access program delivers over $100,000 in free passes

Library cardholder benefit offered in twenty-four parishes, continues to expand adding library branches and participating museums

BATON ROUGE, La. – During its first six months, the State Library of Louisiana’s Check Out Louisiana Museums initiative has issued over $100,000 in free museum passes to Louisiana library cardholders, as the program expands to include more libraries, museums, and cultural attractions.

Launched in July 2025, Check Out Louisiana Museums allows library patrons of participating local library systems to check out an electronic pass to participating museums at no cost.

“It’s no surprise the response to Check Out Louisiana has been so strong,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “Louisiana boasts some of the finest museums and cultural institutions in the nation, and now all you need is your library card to reserve a free day pass to experience them. This is another great benefit that adds even more value to your local library membership.”

Cardholders of participating library systems can visit CheckOutLouisiana.org to reserve an electronic pass for available dates at any of the following museums:

  • 1850 House, New Orleans
  • Alexandria Museum of Art
  • Capitol Park Museum, Baton Rouge
  • The Cabildo, New Orleans
  • E.D. White Historic Site, Thibodaux
  • The Historic New Orleans Collection
  • Louisiana Civil Rights Museum, New Orleans
  • Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame & Northwest Louisiana History Museum, Natchitoches
  • The National WWII Museum, New Orleans
  • New Orleans Jazz Museum
  • New Orleans Museum of Art
  • New Canal Lighthouse at the Pontchartrain Conservancy, New Orleans
  • The Presbytère, New Orleans
  • Wedell-Williams Aviation & Cypress Sawmill Museum, Patterson
  • West Baton Rouge Museum, Port Allen
  • Whitney Plantation, Wallace

The museum access component of Check Out Louisiana started with four library systems in July 2025. Systems currently participating include those in Ascension, Avoyelles, Caddo, Concordia, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Franklin, Iberville, Jefferson, Lafourche, Livingston, Rapides, Sabine, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, Washington, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana parishes, as well as the State Library, with more systems coming on board in 2026.

“Beyond books, Louisiana’s libraries offer a number of services that enrich and support lifelong learning,” said State Librarian Meg Placke. “Check Out Louisiana is another example of library membership value, giving cardholders the free opportunity to unlock the door to the venues and resources that deepen our understanding of our state’s history and culture.”

In recent months, the number of Check Out Louisiana partner museums has nearly doubled, with the latest additions being the Alexandria Museum of Art, the New Canal Lighthouse at the Pontchartrain Conservancy, and the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).

“NOMA is proud to partner with the State Library of Louisiana for the Check Out Louisiana Museums program, joining incredible local organizations – including the National World War II Museum, the Historic New Orleans Collection, and many more – in sharing our city's rich arts and culture offerings with visitors from across Louisiana,” said NOMA Visitor Experience Manager Alexander McClinton. “We’re excited to invite Louisiana library card holders to visit the museum and the globally-renowned Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, where they can experience over 5,000 years of art history while surrounded by the natural beauty of New Orleans' City Park.”

A limited number of passes are available for each participating museum, and local library patrons are urged to plan their museum visit while supplies last.
