Free day passes to Louisiana state parks available to cardholders in all 68 library systems
BATON ROUGE, La. – Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and the State Library of Louisiana announced today that library cardholders in all 64 parishes can now enjoy free access to Louisiana’s State Parks through the expanded Check out Louisiana program.
Through a partnership between the State Library and Louisiana State Parks, library patrons can check out a free day pass from their local library to visit any of Louisiana’s 21 state parks and 14 historic sites. Originally launched in October 2024 with 19 participating library systems, the program has now grown to include all 68 public library systems statewide – making it accessible to communities across Louisiana.
The expansion comes as Louisiana celebrates 2026 as the “Year of Outdoors,” a statewide initiative by the Louisiana Office of Tourism highlighting the state’s identity as the Sportsman’s Paradise and encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore its abundant natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities.
“We’re proud to expand this program to every corner of Louisiana, giving citizens across the state the opportunity to discover our state parks and historic sites at no cost by simply using a library card,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “As we celebrate the ‘Year of Outdoors,’ there’s never been a better time to experience Louisiana’s state parks. This program removes barriers and creates opportunities for more people to explore, connect with nature, and take pride in the incredible resources we have right here at home.”
Day passes are available for checkout at any participating Louisiana public library on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. In addition to free passes, patrons can also check out a Geaux Explore backpack to enhance their visit. Each backpack includes binoculars, a compass, magnifying glass, Leave No Trace outdoor ethics cards, and field guides to Louisiana birds, wildlife, trees, and flowers. Passes and backpacks are also available at the State Library in downtown Baton Rouge.
“In Louisiana, your library card unlocks more than just the outstanding resources of your local library,” said State Librarian Meg Placke. “Through programs like Check Out Louisiana, it becomes a passport that connects you with our state’s storied history, culture, recreation, and outdoor life. We’re very happy to extend the state parks offering to all our public library systems and encourage cardholders to take advantage of this valuable benefit.”
“We’re proud to expand this successful partnership with our fellow agency and open the door to even more Louisianans who may not have experienced our state parks or historic sites before,” said Assistant Secretary Brandon Burris. “By providing access through local libraries, we hope to inspire new visitors to explore, connect with nature, and become lifelong Louisiana State Parks patrons.
